元DTのリーダー兼ドラマーのMike Portnoyは現在、
このSons of Apolloというバンドに在籍している。
しかもメンバーも超豪華。
Baなんてビリー・シーンだからね。
マイキー、ビリー、お前らこの他にも色々バンド組んでるやろ。
中良すぎ。
まず驚くべきは、ギターもベースもツインネックってことですね。

Metropolis pt.1 / Dream Theater
プログレッシブ・メタルといえば、まずはやはりこの人たち。
かくいう私も、楽曲の美しさとその圧倒的なスケールに、
衝撃を受けた一人である。
HR/HMを深掘りするようになったのも、DTのおかげかもしれない。
いや、HR/HMに限らず、
洋楽をdigるようになったのも全て彼らのおかげかも。
ちなみに、
メタル、といえばどうしてもその
激しいサウンドを第一に受け止められるが、
特にプログレやシンフォニックなメタルたちは、
歌詞もずば抜けて良いことが多い。
DTはもちろんサウンドも大好きだが、
それと同等レベルに、歌詞も大好きだ。
メタルの歌詞は普遍的なことを歌うことが多い。
生きるとは何か、とか
愛とは何か、とか。
邦楽POPSに溢れてる、みみっちい恋愛ではなく、
形而上学的な「愛そのもの」を考える、
このメタルの姿勢がたまらない。
それをゴリゴリの男たちがやっているというのもまた、
感情豊かに聞こえて面白い。

そのくらいデカい、誰もが知っているバンド。
アメリカの政治情勢まで変えたんだからね。
現在ファッション業界で流行っている「グランジファッション」も、
この男が作り上げたもの。
案の定中学高校でNirvanaにどハマりした私は、
邦書だけに留まらず洋書までも、カートの日記や伝記を読み漁り、
実際にシアトルのロックミュージアムに訪れるほどの崇拝っぷりだった。
現在でも、大尊敬しているけれど。
NirvanaといえばSmells like teen spiritがあまりにも有名だが、
ここはあえてのHeart-Shaped Boxを。
赤ちゃんがジャケットのNevermindももちろん大好きだけれど、
僕はIN UTEROが一番好み。
グラミー賞受賞、感動のPVは短編映画。

グラミー賞を受賞した最高のPV。
二度目で多数の伏線がわかる、まるで映画のような構成に脱帽。
Nickelback、私自身は高校生の時からずっと愛しているバンドです。
悩んでは聞き、苦しんでは聞き、時には失恋してまた聞き...
激しいサウンドの裏に、宇宙規模の優しさがあるんです、このバンドは。
むしろその激しいサウンドが、心の葛藤を表しているようで。
これだから、HR/HMのバラードが一番心に刺さるんですけどね。
歌詞も本当に優しい。
「弱虫で負け犬な」ロックの本質をしっかりと受け継いでいるんです。

Rhapsody of fireに次ぐ、イタリア屈指のメロスピバンド。
Angel of Revenge／Vision Divine
メタルとシンフォニックの掛け合いがたまらない。
個人的に音楽のジャンルの中で一番好きなのはこの、
「メロスピ×シンフォニック」 です。
元々はLabyrinthのGt、Olaf Thörsenのソロプロジェクトとして
始まったVision Divineであるが、
現在は一つの正式なバンドとして地位を築き上げている。
なんなら、元々ソロプロジェクトだったことを知らないで
ファンになっている人も結構いるんじゃないだろうか。
この曲に関しては、撮影場所がオペラハウスっていうのも
正々堂々としていてかっこいいね。
最も敬愛するラッパー。
